| "Ages 4-8. When two dirty, ugly, rude giants move into town, you know you've got trouble. Beatrix the Buttermaid and her cow, Gerda, are right in the middle of the trouble when the giants scoop up Gerda for a snack. But Beatrix isn't brave and resourceful for nothing. Using a little psychology, she persuades the giants that Gerda will taste better in a clean castle ("Clean?" the giants said. "What's that?"). Once everything is cleaned up, the giants are hungrier than ever from all their work ("Cow, we want cow")! To divert them, Beatrix shows the duo how good manners will make their meal more enjoyable, and then she convinces them to tidy up themselves. By the time she's finished, it's obvious to everyone that two such clean, attractive and well-mannered giants wouldn't just stuff a cow into their mouths, and Beatrix is able to satisfy their ever-present hunger by throwing a party for the whole village, with the guests bringing enough food to satisfy even the giants. Wood has a talent for drawing characters who are over-sized, exaggerated, and just plain goofy-looking - and boy, does she use that to good effect here. Transforming the giants and their environs (so dirty the pages almost reek) offers plenty of illustration opportunities, and Wood, using water-color, gouche, and colored pencils on over-sized pages, makes the most of each one. Kids will be clamoring for this one. Fun - Ilene Cooper" |
| I love your books, especially Rude Giants. I like the part when the two giants look in the mirror and they have a surprised look on their faces. - Sommer, Age 9 |

"The illustrations in this book were inspired by my travels in Norway.
I have traveled widely and loved many countries that I have visited and
lived in, but if I could only pick one as my favorite it would have to
be Norway." -Audrey Wood
