| SMART PIGGY'S NEWSLETTER By Audrey Wood Compiled by Heath Uliasz February 1999 #1 Dear Friends, Welcome to our first newsletter. Please feel free to e-mail me anytime with suggestions about things you would like to see in Smart Piggy's Newsletter. Two illustrators in The Clubhouse have now received Caldecott Honors. My dear friend David Shannon just won a 1998 Caldecott Honor for NO DAVID! David both wrote and illustrated his book NO DAVID!. If you haven't read NO DAVID! you are missing a great book! The other Caldecott Honor was awarded to Don Wood in 1985 for his illustrations in KING BIDGOOD'S IN THE BATHTUB. King Bidgood's in the hospital, and when will he get out? Harold Bidgood, the man who modeled for the king in our book is recovering from a serious illness. He is doing very well but we think drawings and letters from children (or adults) who love our book would help speed his recovery. Here's the deal. If you or your children write or send a drawing to Harold (perhaps a Valentine?), we will send you an autographed, personalized quick cartoon sketch of King Bidgood! Address letters to: Harold the King PO Box 92239 Santa Barbara, CA 93190-2239 For the cool sketch, please include a self-addressed stamped 9 X12 envelope. The sketch will be drawn on an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper. *********************************************************************** QUESTION & ANSWER: Q: Which book is our favorite? A: HECKEDY PEG, Don and I believe the quality of writing and illustration are perfectly matched. *********************************************************************** MEET MY FRIEND, KING BIDGOOD We are often asked if King Bidgood is based on a real, historical character. The truth is that King Bidgood was modeled after Don's old college friend, Harold Bidgood! To find out what the real King Bidgood looks like and what his real job is: Go to the clubhouse page and click on the smiling "TOP SECRET" book. When you arrive at the "Secrets" page click on a link that says "More Secrets" On the next page click on "More Secrets" again Click this link to go to the next "secrets" page. Now click on the nodding picture of King Bidgood. *********************************************************************** WRITER'S TIP! Come up with one central idea. Then make sure that whatever happens in your story adds something new to that central idea. *********************************************************************** ILLUSTRATOR'S TIP! Don't be afraid to draw something that looks ugly. It takes a long time to learn how to draw. Keep practicing. Draw everything, especially the things that are hardest for you to draw. Read the book DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN. Be brave! *********************************************************************** QUESTION & ANSWER: Q: Where is your favorite place to write? A: In my bed with my cat curled up next to me. *********************************************************************** HOW DID I WORK WITH DAVID SHANNON? David Shannon and I created the book, THE BUNYANS, together. In our book Paul Bunyan has a wife named Carie and two children. They also have a blue ox named Babe. But David added another pet to my Paul Bunyan tale. And David's addition forced me rewrite part of my manuscript! To find out why: Go to the Clubhouse page and click on "Meet The Artists." When you arrive at the "Meet the Artists" page, click on David Shannon's name. Now you should be at the "David Shannon" home page. Click on a link that says "How do an author and illustrator really work together?" ********************************************************************* SPECIAL LIMITED TIME OFFER FOR NEWSLETTER FANS! Send Bookplates to: Smart Piggy Bookplates PO Box 92239 Santa Barbara, CA 93190-2239 *********************************************************************** QUESTION & ANSWER: Q: Where do I get the ideas for my stories? A: Life experiences, dreams, and things that interest me. *********************************************************************** WHAT DO THE ILLUSTRATORS AND I LOOK LIKE?
