Ned Bittinger is an award-winning portrait painter who also enjoys painting figurative scenes, landscapes and illustrations. A native Washingtonian, Ned attended Denison University in Granville,Ohio and returned to D.C. to earn his Master of Fine Arts degree at George Washington University.
Influenced by such great artists as John Singer Sargent, Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov and N.C. Wyeth, Ned paints in a style of realism that retains fresh and spontaneous brushwork thereby imparting energy and immediacy to his paintings.
His list of portrait subjects includes: Secs.of State James A. Baker and Lawrence Eagleburger for the US State Department, John Evans, a founder of C-Span, Shirley MacLaine, and many leaders of the corporate, legal, medical and diplomatic professions. His portraits are included in the collections of Dr. Henry Kissinger, University of Virginia, Loyola College, George Washington University, and the Baker Institute of Public Policy.
During the last ten years Scholastic Press has contracted with him to illustrate several children’s books. His most recent, “Rocking Horse Christmas”, written by Mary Pope Osborne was chosen by The American Booksellers as their “Pick of the Lists”. His second book, “The Blue and the Gray”, written by Eve Bunting, was selected by The International Readers Association as their “Teacher’s Choice” and by the children of Indiana for their “Hoosier Young Readers” Award.
In 1995 the American Library Association awarded Ned’s first book, “The Matzah That Papa Brought Home”, by Fran Manushkin the Notable Children’s Book award.
Articles written about Ned and reproductions of his artwork have been included in such publications as Georgetown and Country, Albemarle Magazine, Washingtonian Magazine, People Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine, American Artist, Lands’ End Catalog, and the Charlottesville Daily Progress.
Ned lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
